Funding of alternativs to animal experiments in Sweden

In addition to the funding from the Swedish Fund for Research without Animal Experiments, the Swedish government has provided funding for research to develop alternatives to animal experiments since 1981.

The Board of Agriculture is the government agency responsible for enforcing the animal welfare legislation in Sweden and since 2009, the Swedish Research Council is funding research into alternatives to animal experiments.

The government budget for funding 3R's reseach have been cut from 15 million SEK per year in 2003-2006 to 10 millions in 2007 and down to 8 million SEK in 2008. From 2009 the budget is increased to 12 million SEK per year.  AstraZeneca is expected to continue its additional support of 1 million SEK to be distributed by the Swedish Research Council.
